Piriac sur Mer – France

  • 05/05/2012

The small town of Piriac-sur-Mer is at the western end of the Guérande peninsula in the Loire-Atlantique department of north-west France, and about 15 kilometers north-west of the historic town of Guérande.

Start your visit with a stroll around the port which is the center of the town and contains a mix of fishing boats and pleasure boats.

Behind the port, Piriac is a very traditional Breton town with sturdy granite houses dating largely from the 17th and 18th centuries, and the substantial church of Saint-Pierre, built in the second half of the 18th century. There are various small shops and restaurants in the streets of the old town.

Because of this traditional architecture Piriac is officially listed as a ‘Petite Cité de Caractère des Pays de La Loire’ (small city of character of the Pays de la Loire), as well as being a 3* village fleuri (towns in bloom).

You can learn more about the history of Piriac-sur-Mer at the Maison du Patrimoine (3 place Henri Vignioboul) which has some local objects of interest and a large number of postcards showing Piriac at the start of the 20th century.
